Dean Marta Kuzma of the Yale School of Art announces the appointment of A.L. Steiner as Assistant Dean for Planning and Relations with the aim to foster increased collaboration amongst colleagues and students across all areas within the graduate and undergraduate programs. Beginning as Assistant Dean for Planning and Relations on July 1st, 2020, Steiner will work closely with the Dean to provide strategic guidance in relations between students and the SoA community, between the School and faculty, and between the School and the University, as well as working with the Dean in fostering a dialogue and programming around research opportunities.
A 2020 Guggenheim Fellow, A.L. Steiner is a current member of the School of Art’s full-time faculty. She was first designated as a Yale Presidential Visiting Fellow in Photography for 2018 and joined as Senior Critic in Interdisciplinary Studies in 2019. Steiner’s practice as an artist reflects that of a critical cultural producer whose approach to pedagogy, as well as her work as an artist and activist, has fostered substantive critical exchanges within the classroom, unraveling what she has referred to as the “interconnected and dependent conditions which lead to decision-making processes.” She is a founding member of Working Artists for a Greater Economy (W.A.G.E.) and co-curator of the curatorial initiative Ridykeulous, which foregrounds lesbian and feminist issues.
With a practice that engages with cross-disciplinary and institutional dialogue, Steiner’s role as Assistant Dean for Planning and Relations will support the School’s educational and logistical planning by fostering essential conversations with respect to the ways in which artists work within emerging and present economies, and in relation to art and social justice, set against the backdrop of a changing professional and academic landscape.
