La Casa, the Latino Cultural Center at Yale, is celebrating the installation of two new murals created in collaboration with the School of Art’s Painting/Printmaking department.
On the kitchen wall, Rebecca Sosa-Coba, Yale College ‘25, painted a mural depicting student-submitted images of food and home over November break, in an effort to provide more visual representation of Indigenous communities and cultures. Zoe Cire, Painting/Printmaking MFA '24, was hired to provide technical assistance to Rebecca, and together, they sketched out the mural and prepared it for community participation over two weekends.
Danielle De Jesus, MFA '21, was selected to paint a mural in another room of La Casa, based on a proposal submitted by the leaders of the Puerto Rican student organization Despierta Boricua, Mia Velez and Amelia Winn.
“After meeting with her, it was evident she was the right person," Eileen Galvez, Assistant Dean and Director at La Casa shared, "She expanded the scope of her vision not just to one wall, but the entire room. Throughout, students, faculty, and staff have stopped by to talk and be in community as she paints. Danielle enjoys the company and it makes her process more meaningful.”
De Jesus’ work centers on Puerto Rico and its diasporas, and her mural will feature QR codes that lead to sound bites of students reading Puerto Rican poetry.
We’re excited to invite you to a public reception celebrating these new murals on the evening of April 24. The event will start with a presentation at the Yale School of Art and transition to a reception at La Casa. Attendees will be able to speak with the artists, enjoy some refreshments, and view the murals.
