In collaboration with the School of Art, the Yale University Art Gallery will present an exhibition devoted to the work of Sheila Levrant de Bretteville in Spring 2024. Co-curated by independent curator Brooke Hodge and John Stuart Gordon, the Benjamin Attmore Hewitt Curator of American Decorative Arts at the Gallery, the exhibition will survey de Bretteville’s pioneering, community-based, and politically responsive career. Spanning from her student years at Yale and her decades in Los Angeles—where she co-founded the Woman’s Building and the Feminist Studio Workshop—to her long tenure as Director of Yale’s Graduate Program in Graphic Design, the exhibition will explore her professional design work and public art projects through a wide range of material drawn primarily from de Bretteville’s personal archive.
Exhibition dates: February 16-June 23, 2024, Yale University Art Gallery, 1111 Chapel Street, New Haven.
