How to Apply

• The Yale School of Art is one of 14 professional schools at the University, and a separate unit from the Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS). It is not possible to apply to the MFA program by using the Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences’s website.
• Yale has one admission cycle annually, admitting a new cohort of students to the fall semester only.
• Applicants will be notified in early February of preliminary admission decisions. At that time, finalists are invited to interview with the admission committee.
• Final offers of admission are sent in early March. 
• Offers of admission are valid for the year the application is made. Yale does not practice deferred admission. 
• Applicants who choose not to enroll are welcome to reapply for admission in a future year. 
• Admissions committees are steered by faculty members from the Yale School of Art and supported by our admissions team. The acceptance rate for Fall 2025 admission was 5%.
• Yale School of Art practices “need blind” admission, wherein candidate financial need or ability is never disclosed to the admissions committee.
• Yale School of Art does not offer campus tours or personalized portfolio reviews.
  Applicants are asked not to directly contact faculty or students seeking portfolio advice.

• The application for the 2027-2028 academic year will open in October 2026; it is due January 10, 2027 at 11:59PM, after which the general admissions portal will be closed. The admissions committee reviews applications shortly after the application deadline has passed. 
• Notifications of Financial Aid award will be sent shortly following notification of admission for those who have met the filing deadline. 
• The deadline to declare intent to enroll in the Yale School of Art is April 15th. Offers of admission include an official reply form.
• Note that late arrival of materials—letters of recommendation, in particular—may result in an applicant’s exclusion from the first round of admissions reviews.

• Standard educational requirements for the Yale School of Art include a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university or a diploma from a four-year accredited art school. 
• Each area of study features its own specific entrance requirements as outlined below. 
• Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores are not required for admission. International students should refer to English proficiency exam and additional entrance requirements as defined below. 

• International students must use the legal name listed on their passport on all application materials.

Graduate-level English proficiency is necessary for entry to and successful completion of the MFA degree program. Non-native English speakers can demonstrate proficiency in one of two ways:

1. Test of English as a Foreign Language - required for international applicants whose undergraduate degree instruction was not English. Yale accepts the following test types:
   1. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL IBT, recommended  score: 100 or higher. TOEFL code: 3982)
   2. The International English Language Testing System (IELTS, recommended score: 7 or higher)
   3. Duolingo English Test (recommended score: 120 or higher).
2. Test requirement is waived if undergraduate degree was conferred by college/university program where English (non-ESL) is the primary language of instruction.
    

• Please submit your application through the Slate portal.
• Note that the application form opens in early October and closes on January 10, 2027.
• You may check your application’s status within the portal following the deadline.

• The cost to apply is a $100 non-refundable application fee.
• Applicants may pay the fee in the application portal.
• Fee waivers are not available due to Yale School of Art’s “need-blind” admissions practice.

• Please write a one-page statement, in English, that describes your current practice, interests and influences, lived experiences relative to your work and research, and goals for graduate study at Yale at this time.
• Please include your most recent resume or Curriculum Vitae (CV).

• Request recommendation letters as far in advance as possible to allow your references lead time to write thoughtfully about you and submit their letter by January 10.
• Please include letters from three references, ideally practicing or teaching in your area of interest.
• Seek letters of support from those familiar with your practice, community values, and potential for growth in Yale School of Art’s program.
• Though the submission portal for references will remain open, late submissions risk possible exclusion from the first round of reviews.
• Applicants can view the receipt status of reference letters and send reminders on the application status page.

• The platform sequences your work chronologically by year, from the oldest to the most recent. This cannot be changed.
• Do not format images in a presentation program (e.g. Powerpoint, Keynote) as they will not display within the Slate system.
• Each image should be labeled with a title, date, medium, and a brief description of the work; titles are limited to 30 characters and descriptions, to one brief sentence.
• Please do not include your name in the title of the work or its description.
• Present work simply and largely within the frame. We suggest submitting single images with one view of the work.
• Please avoid composite shots as they make work difficult to see and understand.
• When preparing books or pamphlets, please include several shots showing primary images or make a short video showing a range of spreads.

• Media files must not exceed 5MB in size.
• Documents uploaded must not exceed 75 pages.
• Video files should not exceed 2 minutes in length. Do not use video as a means of showing additional still works. Do not include captions, titles, or credits in video files.
• Longer videos may be hosted independently (i.e. on Vimeo or your own website) with a link included at the end of your statement.
• Note that the committee will not review extensively long video work.
• The following file types are supported by Slate: 
  • Video: .3g2, .3gp, .avi, .m2v, .m4v, .mkv, .mov, .mpeg, .mpg, .mp4, .mxf, .webm, .wmv
  • Audio: .aac, .m4a, .mka, .mp3, .oga, .ogg, .wav
  • Slide: .bmp, .jpg, .jpeg, .png, .tif, .tiff
  • Do not use .gif files

• The Resume or CV should not exceed 2 pages. 
   
• The statement should not exceed 1 page. 
   
• Applicants to the Painting/Printmaking program should refer to “representative work” in the portfolio in their statements to align with the Slate system; applicants to other programs are not required to make this reference.

• Upload up to twenty (20) still images and/or videos (but not only videos) that represent your strongest work, with an emphasis on recent work from the last few years.

• Upload a total of sixteen (16) still images and/or moving image files.
• Only work completed within the last three years should be included, and at least half (8) should be work made in the last twelve months.
• In the review process, the admissions committee is concerned with scale and the tactility of the work. For this reason, paintings and drawings must be photographed showing the edge of the work.
• Paintings and drawings must not be digitally masked in black to the edges of the work.
• Three-dimensional works should also show the surrounding space and context. Do not include detailed photos of work in your portfolio unless you consider them absolutely necessary.
• Under no circumstances should more than two detail shots be included.

• Upload a total of twenty (20) still images and/or moving image files.
• A significant number of the images should represent work done within the last twelve months.
• If you are presenting both still and moving images, please present them in two groups with all still images followed by all moving images.
• Within these groups, place all still and/or moving image files in chronological order, starting with the oldest and ending with the most recent work. Remember that you will not be able to override the chronological order feature of the Slate system. 

• Upload a total of twenty (20) still images and/or time-based files.
• A significant number of the images should represent work done within the last twelve months. 
• Three-dimensional works should show the surrounding space and context.

• Applicants may track the status of their application in the application portal, on the admissions status page.
• Applicants may track the receipt of supporting materials such as letters of recommendation.
• Our office is unable to provide application status checks or confirm the receipt of items by phone or by email.

• The interview is an important component of the final selection process. Detailed instructions will be included in the invitation to interview.
• Applicants who have advanced to final candidacy for admission will be notified in early February.
• Candidates are required to submit official transcripts to the School of Art.
• Candidates are asked to prepare supplemental portfolio materials to be presented digitally during the interview: Sculpture and Graphic Design candidates will be required to share their work via screenshare, while Painting and Printmaking and Photography students may submit files in advance via Dropbox.
• Individual interviews will be scheduled for mid-late February, depending on the program.
