Darkrooms: General Information
The Yale University, School of Art Darkroom facilities are open to undergraduate or graduate student currently enrolled in the Photography Department program of study.
The Undergraduate Lab consists of two multi-station B&W gang labs, finishing areas and several private multi-purpose darkrooms. There is also one 10 station digital lab for Intermediate and Advanced level classes. This lab contains Epson ink jet printers and several flat-bed scanning stations. Undergraduates enrolled in Intermediate and Advanced level classes have access to the labs during open hours.
Special departmental access is required for some Undergraduate lab areas.
Graduate students have access to two shared darkrooms for B&W and alternative process printing and finishing. The main MFA lab space is a 10 station digital production facility. This space contains two Epson 44" wide format ink jet printers, one 64" ink jet printer, one Imacon scanner (for up to 4 by 5 inch negatives), and several other scanners and printers. All darkroom facilities are available to graduate students twenty-four hours a day. Personal studio spaces are available for weekly use. These studios are used for viewing and production of work throughout the students time at Yale.
A variety of equipment is available for loan to students currently enrolled in classes within the Photography Department.
The Darkroom Labs are Faculty supported, and have individual student monitors for evening and Sunday open lab hours.
We cannot accommodate any outside use due to budgetary and space requirements, other than currently enrolled students in Undergraduate and MFA in Photography Department. Requests for use outside of these two categories will be denied, with no exceptions.
