Democracy\" takes on the privatized public sphere of American television

 the 1960s and 1970s to open television's closed circuit. \n\nVideos by V

SUMMARY:Rochelle Feinstein\nExhibition Opening Reception: Friday\, Janua
 ry 25\, 7-9 pm
DESCRIPTION:Momenta Art is pleased to present new work by Rochelle Feins
tein. This is her first solo exhibition in five years.\n\nRochelle Feins
tein focuses on creating beautiful\, uncanny paintings that employ light
as a medium both literally and metaphorically\, connecting subject matt
er from vastly different realms of experience. Her recent Hotspot painti
ngs present images that reference both reflective mirror balls and globe
s\, commemorating each year of U.S. military engagement in Afghanistan a
nd Iraq. Whether the \"Hotspot\" signifies a lens flare\, WiFi access\,
a whiteout\, a point of intense heat or radiation\, or a site of politic
al upheaval\, its virtuality is offset by the visual slowness of dutiful
ly hand-made\, old-media halftone dots - effectively grounding the techn
ological\, social and political in the physicality of paint.\n\nThese Ho
tspot paintings connect to another series\; this one painted or printed
directly onto mirrored tiles. These works reference Yoko Ono and John Le
 nnon's \"War is Over\" anti-Vietnam War campaign\, as well as the earlie
r WWII newspaper headline that Ono and Lennon appropriated. Feinstein ad
apts this highly politicized historical declaration by adding another su
bjective layer - turning the phrase into \"Love is Over!\" and referenci
ng the languages of twelve ex-lovers. She then disempowers her own words
' negativity by physically turning the works on their sides.\n\nIn other
recent paintings\, made on outdated TV screens\, televised light from t
he news\, soap operas\, and talk shows is filtered through a still image
\, altering perceptions of the barrage of commentary. In these and the a
bove mentioned works\, the one-way channel of media information begins t
o flow in reverse\, re-inserting the interpretive (and revolutionary) ac
t of dialogue into a top-down world of consumption. This reversal ultima
tely provides the viewer with a sense of hope\, made possible through th
e filter of one life and the imperfections of the painted world.\n\nRoch
elle Feinstein lives and works in New York. She has exhibited her works
nationally and internationally and has been a professor of painting at t
he School of Art\, Yale University\, since 1995. She will be having two
solo exhibitions in January 2008\; at Momenta Art\, Brooklyn\, NY\, and
at The Suburban\, Chicago. Feinstein has had solo exhibitions at Ten in
 One Gallery\, 2002\, Max Protetch Gallery\, 1997\, Bill Maynes Gallery\,
1996\, in New York\, among many others. Her work has been reviewed in
 Artforum\, TimeOut\, Tema Celeste\, Artnews\, Art in America\, The New Y
ork Times\, The New Yorker Magazine\, and other publications.\n\n \n\nMo
menta Art is located at 359 Bedford Avenue\, ground floor\, between S4th
and S5th Sts. in Williamsburg\, Brooklyn. By subway\, take the L train
to Bedford stop (the first stop in Brooklyn). Exit on the Bedford side.
Walk south 12 blocks. By car\, take the outside lane of the Williamsburg
Bridge to the first exit. Make a sharp right onto Broadway. Drive 2 blo
cks to Bedford Avenue and make a right. We are located a half block on t
he right after you pass under the bridge. 917.348.8427\n\n\nMomenta Art

on the popularity of the speech\, the team will get a point or\, if the
speech is not well received\, the opposite team will get a point.\n\nAf

SUMMARY:Rochelle Feinstein\nExhibition Opening Reception: Friday\, Janua
 ry 25\, 7-9 pm
DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20080126
DESCRIPTION:\nMomenta Art is pleased to present new work by Rochelle Fei
nstein. This is her first solo exhibition in five years.\n\nRochelle Fei
nstein focuses on creating beautiful\, uncanny paintings that employ lig
ht as a medium both literally and metaphorically\, connecting subject ma
tter from vastly different realms of experience. Her recent Hotspot pain
tings present images that reference both reflective mirror balls and glo
bes\, commemorating each year of U.S. military engagement in Afghanistan
and Iraq. Whether the \"Hotspot\" signifies a lens flare\, WiFi access\
, a whiteout\, a point of intense heat or radiation\, or a site of polit
ical upheaval\, its virtuality is offset by the visual slowness of dutif
ully hand-made\, old-media halftone dots - effectively grounding the tec
hnological\, social and political in the physicality of paint.\n\nThese
Hotspot paintings connect to another series\; this one painted or printe
d directly onto mirrored tiles. These works reference Yoko Ono and John
 Lennon's \"War is Over\" anti-Vietnam War campaign\, as well as the earl
ier WWII newspaper headline that Ono and Lennon appropriated. Feinstein
adapts this highly politicized historical declaration by adding another
subjective layer - turning the phrase into \"Love is Over!\" and referen
cing the languages of twelve ex-lovers. She then disempowers her own wor
ds' negativity by physically turning the works on their sides.\n\nIn oth
er recent paintings\, made on outdated TV screens\, televised light from
the news\, soap operas\, and talk shows is filtered through a still ima
ge\, altering perceptions of the barrage of commentary. In these and the
above mentioned works\, the one-way channel of media information begins
to flow in reverse\, re-inserting the interpretive (and revolutionary)
act of dialogue into a top-down world of consumption. This reversal ulti
mately provides the viewer with a sense of hope\, made possible through
the filter of one life and the imperfections of the painted world.\n\nRo
chelle Feinstein lives and works in New York. She has exhibited her work
s nationally and internationally and has been a professor of painting at
the School of Art\, Yale University\, since 1995. She will be having tw
 o solo exhibitions in January 2008\; at Momenta Art\, Brooklyn\, NY\, an
d at The Suburban\, Chicago. Feinstein has had solo exhibitions at Ten i
 n One Gallery\, 2002\, Max Protetch Gallery\, 1997\, Bill Maynes Gallery
\, 1996\, in New York\, among many others. Her work has been reviewed i
 n Artforum\, TimeOut\, Tema Celeste\, Artnews\, Art in America\, The New
York Times\, The New Yorker Magazine\, and other publications.\n\n \n\n
Momenta Art is located at 359 Bedford Avenue\, ground floor\, between S4
th and S5th Sts. in Williamsburg\, Brooklyn. By subway\, take the L trai
n to Bedford stop (the first stop in Brooklyn). Exit on the Bedford side
. Walk south 12 blocks. By car\, take the outside lane of the Williamsbu
rg Bridge to the first exit. Make a sharp right onto Broadway. Drive 2 b
locks to Bedford Avenue and make a right. We are located a half block on
the right after you pass under the bridge. 917.348.8427\n\n\nMomenta Ar
