Roxana Marcoci, Critic in Photography

Ms. Marcoci received a Ph.D. in art history, theory, and criticism from the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University, in 1998. She is senior curator of photography at the Museum of Modern Art, where her most recent exhibitions are The Shaping of New Visions: Photography, Film, Photobook; and Taryn Simon: A Living Man Declared Dead and Other Chapters I–XVIII (both 2012). In 2011 she was a fellow at the Center for Curatorial Leadership. Other MoMA exhibitions accompanied by major publications include the retrospective Sanja Ivekovi´c: Sweet Violence (2011); The Original Copy: Photography of Sculpture, 1839 to Today (2010); Pictures by Women: A History of Modern Photography (2010); Jan De Cock: Denkmal 11 (2008); the retrospective Take Your Time: Olafur Eliasson (2008); Comic Abstraction: Image-Breaking, Image-Making (2007); the retrospective Thomas Demand (2005); and Counter-Monuments and Memory (2000). Ms. Marcoci also curated numerous exhibitions focused on contemporary artists, such as Staging Action: Performance in Photography Since 1960 (2011); New Photography 2010; Geometry of Motion 1920s/1970s (2008); and New Photography 2008. Recent exhibitions include the retrospective Christopher Williams: The Production Line of Happiness (2014) and From Bauhaus to Buenos Aires: Grete Stern and Horacio Coppola (2015). She has lectured and published extensively on issues of modern and contemporary art. Her most recent essays include “The Age of the Image” in Mutations (2011) and “From Face to Mask: Collage, Montage, and Assemblage in Contemporary Portraiture” in Modern Women: Women Artists at The Museum of Modern Art (2010). Her book The Original Copy: Photography of Sculpture, 1839 to Today (MoMA, 2010) and its German edition published by Hatje Cantz (with contributions by Geoffrey Batchen and Tobia Bezzola) received the Outstanding Catalogue Based on an Exhibition award from the Association of Art Museum Curators. Ms. Marcoci was appointed critic in photography in 2012.
