These sketches investigate a ‘room within a room’ idea

‘Room within a room’ exhibition created by William Drenttel and Jessica Helfand (I think)

Inventory of gd studio materials

DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE

or THE EVERYTHING PROJECT

Out of love for the truth and the desire to bring it to light, the following propositions will be discussed at Exhibition Class, under the presidency of Exhibition Class. Wherefore we request that those who are unable to be present and debate orally with us, may do so at a later date, in person or by email.

Acknowledging that there exist many zones of overlap between our individual interests and ideas;

Acknowledging that an overarching theme or idea will probably either homogenize our work or be ??gimmicky?;

Acknowledging that this show is the culmination of our time together and everyone should feel that they have a stake in it;

Acknowledging that our class is characterized by an atmosphere of mutual respect and general good vibes;

Be it resolved that the 2007 GD MFA thesis exhibition should be based around a series of collaborations that reflect and grow from commonalities in our interests and ideas.?

We propose that our work be connected through a series of collaborations;

We propose that the space be divided in a way that is mutually agreed upon;

We propose that each person must collaborate with the people directly adjacent to them in the gallery;

We propose that all previously existing work be presented in its original form;

We propose that new material or methods of representation can be made into a project for the show;

We propose that any new project must take the form of a collaboration.

We acknowledge that the above proposition is Risky. However, we contend the show will be Awesome, because our class is Awesome. And for the support of this Declaration, we mutually pledge to each other our Time, our Love and our sacred Honor.

ADDENDUM 1

Possible methods of dividing the space: 1. Divide the gallery into 16 spaces. Pick from a hat. 2. Divide the gallery into 32 spaces. Pick from a hat twice. 3. Divide the gallery into 8 spaces. Pair up. Maybe from a hat. 4. Divide the gallery up in some number divisible by 16 but reserve major sections for video, interactive, and books to conserve resources and infrastructure. 5. Free-for-all. Discuss.

Ways to handle the budget 1. Big ideas that involve money have to involve more people. 2. Really big ideas that involve a lot of money have to involve everybody.

Viewer as collaborator, and repurposing of the gallery space by placing work in unexpected areas of the space (i.e. corners, ceilings, stairs, railings…). Center of the room becomes the rest stop where images are a “blur”, work only becomes activated when viewer is in motion. Interactive, book, and motion work become destinations in mezzanine and basement “microspaces” created by dropping a paper ceiling over the space. Working on strategies for motion and interactive to become fragmented throughout the space.

INVENTIVE REUSE / 5 OBSTRUCTIONS

hi, my aunt is in ny for 2 days so i won’t be able to make it to class today, regardless i’m sending all of you something i have been thinking about for exhibition, our last meeting and the words “innovative reuse” (hope i remembered it ok). on our last meeting armand’s crit came up a lot and i was thinking everything pretty much came out after watching the 5 obstructions… so why don’t we mix the 5 obstructions and innovative reuse?

this is just an idea so you can completely disregard it if you don’t like it

i was thinking after the scavage hunting for materials, each of us pick one in the list (16 in total) and create the physical space, (brad’s walls, micro spaces etc) with only the chosen materials. (projectors/ tvs and all tech stuff could be one?) that way it could really be innovative reuse vs whatever we can get our hands on and see how we can best use it. i think this makes it less about what we are using and more how we are using them…

for example we can have duct tape, cans, botles, fabric, blackboards, chairs, and 11 more and use whatever existing plan we have and make it work with those

3.4.2007 MEETING

  • “workshop” as title?

if we want interaction we use a certain type of table if we want passive interaction, we use a different type

space should be such that certain structures are inactive, but leave a trace they were there.

  • quick reproduction of our work.
  • how about grid? what about where grids intersect?
  • sign for show is made up of 8.5 × 11 sheets that are taken and carried through the exhibition and used.
  • work the space- we position ourselves very literally in the space to activate what is happening at the exhibition-we need to make this apparent.

*station where you can send postcards out into the world

  • have a rule for each of our thesis topics
  • day 1 rule, day 2 = day 1 rule + day 2 rule, … an aggregate
  • need to extend the exhibition into hall space
  • stamp at door as people leave put our mark on everything
  • use work as raw material?
  • unfinished
  • loop is important to our idea
  • recording people in the space is important
  • video edits are with hand
  • interaction is on a cloth sheet that can be pulled in different directions to warp the video.
