Art 581b, Queer Strategies
Structured to provide a primer on selected aspects of queer history, discussions and readings would follow the development of the queer subject, the possibility and realities of queer aesthetics, and how queer strategies have contributed to the development of visual, literary, filmic and philosophical culture. An attempt is made to separate sex, gender, and sexuality as coherent categories, and to investigate them as situations that are perhaps complimentary, but often problematic. It seeks to situate queer culture not as a separate or parallel function of a larger culture, but to directly address how the inclusivity and resistance of the queer movement offers productive models for artistic production now. Classes will address subjects such as AIDS and loss; The Closet and the creation of the queer subject; protest, defiance, and change; the relation of queer identity to other equal rights movements historically and contemporarily; the practice of drag and the fluidity of identity; queer allies, and more.Editor details
