PAINTING / PRINTMAKING Art 572b, Translations
C220 Green Hall Tuesday 2:00 – 5:00
(Open to all MFA students, meets biweekly for 1.5 credits, first class 1/20)
This course will focus on ideas of translation as a creative and generative process. We will use key texts by Jorge Luis Borges as a frame to explore ideas around originality, uses of references, and practices of translation; and to see how these particular methodologies of reading may pertain to contemporary visual art. We will be looking at a diverse group of artist, among them: Liam Gillick, Louise Lawler, Liliana Porter, Artur Barrio, Mario García Torres, Hélio Oiticica, León Ferrari, Glenn Ligon, Guillermo Kuitca, Tacita Dean, and Allen Ruppersberg. Within this larger framework, students will be asked to contextualise and create genealogies of their own work and to ultimately entertain the idea of art making as a form of art history.
