PAINTING / PRINTMAKING, Art 553 01, LABoratory
C220 Green Hall; Monday 2:00-5:00
This course examines the pictorial devices, conceptual positions, and perceptual tools of the pedagogies, ideologies and influences that have informed painters from the mid-20c. to the present. Works in all media will be looked at in relation to their relative and relational contexts irrespective of stylistic classifications or hierarchies. In other words, painting will be viewed an activity existing alongside a number of creative, social and technological forces. Class meetings are structured around three elements: assigned readings, core group presentations, and project assignments. An online syllabus of contemporaneous writings and supplemental essays are available on the class website. The site is also used for online discussions and postings, chat or as a Wiki. Students will be creating new works premised upon specific parameters as suggested by the readings. Limited enrollment. Rochelle Feinstein
