PAINTING/PRINTMAKING 517, Forms of Attention
In this seminar we will consider the role of attention in the making and viewing of art. Taking a
closer look at the transactional nature of “spending” time and “paying” attention, students will
define what it means to make contemplative objects in today’s world, particularly in the context
of graduate school. Experimental, hands-on workshops will focus on duration, relation,
perception, and description. Writings by artists, cultural critics, poets, and scientists will sharpen
our understanding of the history and mechanics of attention. And, most importantly, small group
critiques will enable students to articulate what—and how—they notice.
