GRAPHIC DESIGN ART 006, Art of the Printed Word

Introduction to the art and historical development of letterpress printing. Examination of typographic design, the evolution of private presses, and contemporary printing practices. A historical survey of fine printing, complemented by a practical study of press operations using antique plate presses and the modern cylinder proof press. Topics include typesetting with both hand-set metal and digital type, paper stock and ink selection, basic hand-binding, computer-based design applications, and new technologies such as photopolymer plates. Enrollment limited to fifteen freshmen. Preregistration required through the Freshman Seminar Program.
