UPCOMING EXHIBITION

This January, the Yale School of Art’s 32 Edgewood Gallery will present Side Show, an exhibition about the intersection of fine art and the historical American popular entertainment world of the side show – in which the bodily display of the abnormal, human or animal, would be the focus of the event. Issues of race, ethnicity, gender and disability will be considered.

CAN’T NEVER COULD / THE COURAGE TO FACE THE TRIALS AND BRING A WHOLE NEW BODY OF POSSIBILITIES INTO THE FIELD OF INTERPRETED EXPERIENCETHAT IS THE ARTIST’S DEED. JOSEPH CAMPBELL BY ROGER BROWN, 1991

“As an artist your role is to sit back and observe objectively. If you become part of the freak show, you’re dead. You’re just another whore. The real job of an artist is to use what’s going on, not be used by it.”

Roger Brown, Dialog magazine 1987
